Spartanburg Methodist College to host National Junior College Region X
Baseball Tournament
May 10-14
SPARTANBURG, SC
— Spartanburg Methodist College is hosting the National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X Baseball Tournament
May 10-14 at Wofford College. (Note location change.)
Nine junior college teams from North Carolina and South Carolina will
participate in the double-elimination tournament.
Mark Perdue, athletics director at SMC, encourages the community to come
out for the games. "The caliber of players you will see is equal to the
caliber of any minor league baseball players, and a lot of these young
players are drafted onto professional teams. This is really good college
baseball."
Games will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 5
p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday will include one or two games, depending on how
the brackets work out, at noon and 7 p.m., Perdue says. If needed, a
championship game will be played on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Ticket prices are $12 tournament pass, adult; $10, ages 13-18; under 12
free. Daily pass, $6, adult; $5, ages 13-18; under 12, free.
The tournament will bring some 30 players and coaches with each team,
totaling about 300 for the tournament. Many will be coming from out of
town, along with parents and other supporters.
The host hotel for the event is the Radisson Hotel & Suites.
"This event has a good economic impact on the Spartanburg community,"
Perdue says. "In addition to the players and coaches, the parents and
others will be in town eating and shopping, and staying in hotels while
they aren't watching the games. This has a great benefit to commerce in
the community."
Team Spartanburg, the sports council of the Spartanburg Convention &
Visitors Bureau, is assisting with the event.
