September 12, 2006 The 2006 field represents eight AJGA titles, 17 USGA Junior Championship participants, 11 State Junior Championship winners, and 31 other major victories. The field has an average handicap of below scratch and also represents 16 of the top 100 juniors in the country as compiled by GolfWeek. Peter Uihlein is back to defend his 2005 title as the number two ranked junior in the country. He is coming off an impressive season with three AJGA titles as well as the 2005 AJGA Rolex Player of the Year. Stiff competition is coming from all areas of the country as state champions and other victors are looking to add the Bobby Chapman to their resume. Will Ovenden is the local favorite as the Spartanburg native had an impressive win in the Carolina’s Golf Association’s Junior Championship. Other SC players to watch would be Jacob Burger, McCuen Elmore, and Wesley Bryan. Burger won the SCGA Junior Championship and joins Elmore, Bryan, and Easley native David Dannelly at the top of the SC junior rankings. The tournament is held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman Jr. Chapman, a long-time member of the Country Club of Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association. He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities. In his business life, Chapman was a local and national leader in the textile industry. The tournament also benefits the Spartanburg Foundation and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. Too date, more than $100,000 has gone to scholarship recipients through both organizations thanks to the many kind supporters of the Bobby Chapman. For more information, contact Chris Miller with the SCJGA at (803) 732-9311. The Bobby Chapman is one of 13 major events conducted by the SCJGA.
