Dorman High School hosts Varsity Tournament of Champions Volleyball Tournament Sept. 29-30

SPARTANBURG, SC Dorman High School is hosting the 2006 Dorman Varsity Tournament of Champions volleyball tournament Sept. 29-30.

The elite field for the two-day competition includes Dorman High School, Ashley Hall High School (Charleston), Blessed Trinity Catholic High School (Roswell, GA), Bishop Eng-land High School (Charleston), Blythewood High School (Charleston), Marist High School (Atlanta, GA), Pickens High School, Savannah Christian Preparatory School (Savannah, GA,) Sullivan South High School (Kingsport, TN), Wando High School (Mount Pleasant), West Ashley High School (Charleston) and Landrum High School.

The tournament, originally hosted by Pickens High School, a perennial volleyball powerhouse in South Carolina, is being held at Dorman for the fourth year.

"There are a few new teams added to the line-up for this year’s tournament who are all worthy champions with lots of talent. We are looking forward to the competition and experience of having such well-rounded teams from South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee," says Kelly Bailey, Dorman assistant varsity volleyball coach.

"Each team participating helps the others to become better and work harder toward their season’s goal of success."

Paula Kirkland, tournament director and Dorman varsity volleyball coach, says that seeding the teams is one of the most difficult parts of putting on a tournament with this caliber of competition.

"Seeding is crucial, and it’s hard to seed teams that you haven’t seen play," Kirkland says, "but we work hard to make sure that all the matches are competitive."

Teams are pre-seeded into four four-team pools. First and second place finishers from each pool advance to the Gold Pool and third and fourth place finishers advance to the Silver Pool. Teams will play off to a winner in the Gold Division and a winner in the Silver Division.

Many of the teams will be staying overnight in Spartanburg. Team Spartanburg is assisting with promotion of the tournament
