Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Invitational set for Sept. 22, 23

SPARTANBURG, SC - The field for the 13th Annual Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Invitational has been set with 83 hopeful players vying for this national championship Sept. 22 and 23 at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

The highly skilled field hails from 16 states and the Caymen Islands, putting a true international flavor into the event.  Players qualified though local, regional, and national competitions and were invited based on those merits. Four AJGA victories are represented along with 15 state championships, 22 USGA Junior Championship contestants, and 23 other major titles as well.

The field boasts an average handicap of below scratch and 11 players are ranked in the top 100 of Golfweek’s junior rankings.

Peter Uihlein successfully defended his 2005 title last year as the number two ranked junior in the country, coming off an impressive season with three AJGA titles as well as the 2005 AJGA Rolex Player of the Year.

Local participants include Will Ovenden, Ronnie Funk, John Mauney and Charles Neidenbach of Spartanburg, Brian Horton of Boiling Springs, and Brad Sill of Duncan.

The tournament is held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman Jr. Chapman, a long-time member of the Country Club of Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association. He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities. In his business life, Chapman was a local and national leader in the textile industry. The tournament also benefits the Spartanburg Foundation and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. Too date, more than $100,000 has gone to scholarship recipients through both organizations thanks to the many kind supporters of the Bobby Chapman.
