Team Spartanburg
Sports Council to host SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Team Spartanburg Sports Council will host the Children’s Fun Races for bicycles and Big Wheels for children ages 3 to 12 during the Steadman Hawkins Classic on Friday, May 2. The children’s event will begin at 7:30 p.m., during “half-time” of the criterium, a closed-circuit, multi-lap cycling race that has become a recurring component of Spartanburg’s annual Spring Fling festival (May 2 through 4 in downtown Spartanburg). Big Wheels, training wheels and two-wheeled bicycles are all invited. Age-specific distances of 250 yards or less will be used. Children should bring their own bicycles (or Big Wheels) and helmets. Parents will join their children on the course. The event is free and open to the public. Registration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Denny’s Plaza at the corner of Liberty and East Main streets. The Steadman Hawkins Classic, including the Team Spartanburg Children’s Fun Races, is a major component of the Bike Town initiative, a collaborative campaign that earned the City of Spartanburg its national designation as a Bicycle-Friendly Community. That effort is spearheaded by Partners for Active Living (PAL), a nonprofit, 501c3 organization dedicated to promoting active lifestyles in Spartanburg County.
