‘Back to Football’ Party and Mayor's Ball Run Saturday, July 30, celebrates Panthers’ return

Festivities at Gibbs Stadium include live band, TopCats, local food

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Spartanburg is getting “Back to Football” Saturday as the NFL’s Carolina Panthers head to Wofford College for summer training camp.  Opening day will feature the “Back to Football” Party and a new event, the Mayor’s Ball Run featuring Spartanburg Mayor Junie White and representatives from five other local municipalities.

The events are being hosted by Wofford, the City of Spartanburg and Team Spartanburg Sports Council.

The party will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. at Gibbs Stadium, with Panthers practice scheduled at the stadium from 6 to 8 p.m.  Festivities will feature live performances by popular regional band Hot Sauce and appearances by the TopCat cheerleaders and Panthers mascot Sir Purr.  Alumni Panthers players also will be on hand for autographs.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase at a “Taste of Spartanburg” food court featuring Rick Fowler’s Hogback Mountain BBQ, Bojangles, The Beacon and Domino’s Pizza.  There will be giveaways, door prizes, face painting and other activities.

The Mayor’s Ball Run will begin at 4:15 p.m. at City Hall and end at Gibbs Stadium, where White will present the ball to a Panthers representative and will issue a proclamation.  Towns represented in the ball run include Duncan, Greer, Inman, Pacolet and Wellford.

Admission is free.

The Panthers return to Wofford for its their 17th summer training camp through Wednesday, Aug. 17.  The practice schedule has not been finalized.
